Under Belt Exams
Students progress by achieving small increments of success as they earn their red stripes.
Each red stripe signifies proficiency in one of the five major areas of Martial Arts. As soon as a student earns all their required stripes, we schedule an exam. Additionally, exams are self-paced and offered at each facility, ensuring that every student advances at their own pace.
Black Belt Exams
All prospective students start their journey by taking a Black Belt Preliminary exam.
Following this, each student receives valuable feedback from board members to guide their preparation for the Black Belt exam. Once the preliminary exam is complete, selected students advance to the Black Belt exam, where they are evaluated in five key areas of martial arts: Basic Motion, Forms, Onestep, Ju-jitsu, and Free Sparring. Additionally, we hold Black Belt exams 1-2 times a year at our Bowie Studio. Consequently, this structured approach ensures that students are well-prepared and ready to showcase their skills.
Intramural Tournaments
Students can eagerly participate in our Intramural Tournament, which takes place on the first Saturday in May and the first Saturday in December.
This exciting event features divisions for a range of age groups, including 4-6-year-old Pee Wee’s, 7 and under Youth, 8-10 Youth, 11-12 Youth, and 13 and older adults. Additionally, competitors of all belt ranks, from white belts to Black belts, are welcome to join. Therefore, this tournament provides a fantastic opportunity to test your skills in a healthy, competitive environment while gaining valuable experience.
Summer Day Camp
Enjoy our action-packed day camps at both of our studios!
During these camps, students dive into a diverse range of activities, including Karate, Ju-Jitsu, QiGong, Team Building, Yoga, arts and crafts, and plenty of fun. Specifically, the Bowie Day Camp will take place during the weeks of June 24-28, July 1-5, and July 8-12. In contrast, the Columbia Day Camp is scheduled for the weeks of July 15-19 and July 22-26. Furthermore, no prior martial arts experience is necessary, so everyone is encouraged to join in on the excitement!
27th Annual Summer Overnight Camp
Mark your calendars for July 27 – August 2nd, and get ready for one of the highlights of our year—Overnight Karate Camp!
During this exciting week, campers dive into three workouts a day, while also enjoying a variety of engaging activities such as S’mores, Fight Night, Team Tournament, Field Day, Breaking classes, Weapons classes, and Awards Night. Held at the picturesque Mercersburg Academy in Mercersburg, PA, the camp features a stunning 300-acre campus complete with dorm rooms, a heated Olympic-sized pool, a turf field, 8 athletic grass fields, 2 recreation rooms, a movie theater, and a fitness center. Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity for a memorable and enriching experience!
Private Lessons
Students have the exciting opportunity to take one-on-one private lessons with an instructor.
By scheduling these sessions directly with the teacher, students can focus on specific areas of the curriculum that need attention. As students advance through the belt ranks, these personalized lessons offer targeted support and guidance, which helps them progress more effectively and efficiently. Additionally, these private lessons are designed to enhance the learning experience and address individual goals.

We use red stripes to signify the small yet significant milestones that guide students through their rank progression.
Each red stripe is awarded once a student demonstrates proficiency in a specific area, such as Basic Motion, Forms, or Ju-Jitsu. Consequently, these stripes help track and celebrate the student’s ongoing achievements and skill development.
The time it takes to advance from the first to the second belt typically varies by student.
However, on average, it takes about 3 months for the student. After achieving the second belt, students should anticipate a period of 4-6 months between subsequent exams. This timeline allows for steady progress and skill development, ensuring that students are well-prepared for each advancement.
No, exams are not standardized.
Instead, each exam is individualized and self-paced. Specifically, a student will test for their next belt once they have earned all of their required red stripes. This approach ensures that students advance based on their own progress and proficiency, allowing them to demonstrate their readiness for the next level.
Students develop self-discipline by setting short-term goals that lead to the long-term objective of earning their Black Belt.
Along this journey, they not only master their mind and body but also build their self-esteem. Consequently, this structured approach helps students achieve personal growth and gain confidence as they progress through their training.
The duration varies by student.
However, on average, it typically takes around 5 years to achieve the Black Belt. As a result, this timeframe reflects a committed and consistent effort throughout your martial arts journey.
